About the Free Game Alliance
The Free Game Alliance (FGA) is a great collection of Open Source games, one per genre, which will keep you busy for years to come. What do you need more than a good FPS, a good turn-based strategy game, a good real time strategy game, a good mmorpg and a good car racing game? Probably nothing if the content is updated regularly enough!! That's why the FGA wants to support these projects and make them become known and famous, so more developers and contributors can join them to make this the perfect set of constantly evolving games!
Play, explore, collaborate, and learn! The selected games are in active and open development, so there is plenty for you to explore and contribute if you want to, at the same time they are already playable on all major platforms (Windows, Linux, MacOSX) bringing you a lot of fun.
The projects part of FGA support each other to reach a wider audience and higher quality/playability standards.
The FGA website brings you all the news about each game regularly, so you can follow their development and improvements.

The Free Game Alliance is a collection of games created to sponsor and bring to everyone the concept of Open Source and to have the participating projects support each other. Hundreds of volunteers, enthusiast about game development, are working in their spare time to learn about game development, to let their imagination run free, and to develop games as they always wanted to. Many of them do not have enough visibility or enough support to really become finished products and that's something FGA wants to improve!
In our opinion, selecting one game per each genre is a powerful concept because:
- provides enough variety in the games list, while keeping the set relatively small
- selects the projects who have the potential to become the best in their genre, inspiring other developers to join their effort and make the game better and better
- ensures there is no competition between the selected games, so those can more easily join their forces in advertizing and promoting all participants of the Alliance
- makes every project feel special and unique inside the Alliance, making the discussion between the developers a real learning experience
- provides to players the perfect set of games, so those can be expanded endlessly with new content
- helps new developers to join forces around a single game per genre to have one finished product instead of 10 never completed!
Here are the prerequisites for the projects we selected (and for future projects):
- Be active. The project should have an active development stream, new code, new art, new data. It should have a good group of active developers committed to success.
- Have a good community support. The game should be known enough to be popular or at least have a reasonable sized fan base.
- Have the potential to be a leader in one genre.
- Willingness to support open source development in general and to support other projects part of the alliance.
- Have an open development cycle. The project accepts contributions from the community and seeks new members. The team is open to let new members join the team and develop the game with them.
- Have an OSI approved open source license for the source code. The source code should be available to download.
- The license for the art/data can be any. Copyright of both source code and art/data can be any. This is to allow projects to protect their uniqueness and style.
- Be made by a non-profit/volunteer group and not by a commercial company.
- Players can freely play the game without limits of time without any monthly fee or without having to purchase anything.
